I am working at the European Forest Institute, in the regional office EFICENT-Observatory for European Forests (my official staff page). I am using semantic web functionalities to collect metadata for:
- a Policy portal (working page) on forest policy processes, instruments and institutions.
- a List of forest sector economic models
- Other projects Talk:Observatory for European Forests

Communication
Properties and types are the basic way of entering semantic data in Semantic MediaWiki. Properties can be viewed as «categories for values in wiki pages». They are used by a simple mark-up, similar to the syntax of links in MediaWiki:
- [[property name::value]]
This statement defines a value for the property of the given property name. The page where this is used will just show the text for value and not the property assignment.
- The paragraph on turning links into properties is awesome and simple to understand, yet very powerfull!

- DBPedia Datasets are extracted from Wikipedia's structured information present in infobox templates. Their SPARQL explorer looks impressive.
- An FP7 project: LOD 2 Over the past 3 years, the semantic web activity has gained momentum with the widespread publishing of structured data as RDF. The Linked Data paradigm has therefore evolved from a practical research idea into a very promising candidate for addressing one of the biggest challenges in the area of intelligent information management: the exploitation of the Web as a platform for data and information integration in addition to document search. Development ideas
Not started
- Enable users to edit articles offline with an OpenOffice extension: Une extension OpenOffice.org pour créer des pages de wiki.
- Reuse the RDF exports in an external tool such as those mentionned in Semantic Mediawiki Help:Reuse
- Try Longwell (MIT SIMILE project of a web-based RDF-powered faceted browser), using Apache Maven
- Try the tabulator ("The code uses the RDF browser written by Jim Ley, without which the activation energy for the project would not have been reached at all. Tim Berners-Lee hacked together the original program in spare time around the end of 2005.")
- See also Category:Semantic browser
- Try Longwell (MIT SIMILE project of a web-based RDF-powered faceted browser), using Apache Maven
- Namespace : use the portal namespace like on Portal:Agriculture_and_Agronomy
In progress
- Wy not categorise instruments processes and institutions by Forest europe Qualitative indicators?
See also ideas below.
Done
- Have the right menu of criteria Biodiversity_(FOREST_EUROPE_criterion) similar to that of indicators FOREST_EUROPE_C41_indicator (except with the "unhide" function activated for the corresponding criteria).
- Default values in template rendered the page quite ugly, they are now passed as parameter in the template to be completed: Scope= {{Fill up|Global, pan-European, European Union, Regional or National}}
- "SHOWFACTBOX" is currently removed on most pages because it looks ubscure to new users. We could place the factbox in a hidden footer/navbox or Add a link to the special:browse page in the main policy portal template, see also Help:Special:Browse and how the interface parameter $smwgBrowseShowAll can be set to true to show all incoming properties. --> In fact this is not necessary as ther is a "Browse properties" link on the left menu appearing on each page. + As discussed with Thierry, "when you plan to show the system, factboxes can be specifically displayed on pages, to ease the demo."
Tools and documentation
Wiki
- Wiki syntax for: displaying an image
- Pywikipediabot, a collection of tools that automate work on MediaWiki sites.
Semantic wiki
- SMW user manual
- inline queries and how to write querry strings in selecting pages
- ifeq : {{#ifeq: string 1 | string 2 | value if identical | value if different }}
- French: bonne introduction au web sémantique en français avec (un exemple mentionnant l'extraction d'horaires de trains et horaires d'avions pour préparer un trajet combiné)
- Concepts
- A Faceted classification system allows the assignment of an object to multiple characteristics (attributes), enabling the classification to be ordered in multiple ways, rather than in a single, predetermined, taxonomic order.
- Example based on 73 e-commerce websites: use of faceted navigation
- Controlled vocabularies: Numerous methodologies have been developed to assist in the creation of controlled vocabularies, including faceted classification, which enables a given data record or document to be described in multiple ways.
HTML
- HTML ASCII helps to add characters in URLS, such as square brackets
Test page
Work
Quality checks
- This link allows to search for legally binding policy Processes. Those which do not belong to both categories policy process and policy instrument should be corrected.
Cleanup work
- Add EFI policy portal template to all ToSIA indicators
- Categorize Uncategorized templates using the <noinclude>[[Category:FOREST EUROPE Template]]</noinclude>
- Create Template:FOREST_EUROPE_navbox
Testing semantic elements and templates
- EFI policy instrument test
- sandbox to test the type record
Networking with other institutions
- Demo page on NFZ.forestnet.
Ideas
- Add "development stage" icons, used in wiki books: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Help:Development_stages
- Use <imagemap> to display a mind map from policy portal to link to different parts policies institutions, etc... this is an extension, I don't know if its installed, see extension ImageMap
- Use a Geolocalisation map such as Template:Location map Europe (or Modèle carte d'Europe fr)
- Add contry pages with semantic infoboxes on GDP and contribution of forest sector to GDP
- Use the Extension: Semantic Maps

In Nancy and Lorraine
L’équipe Orpailleur du LORIA-INRIA utilise Semantic Mediawiki, et plus particulièrement web community wiki
Wizards to help new users
- Create a new article wizard such as the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Article_wizard
Ontology Editor
A Semantic Media Wiki Ontology Editor was developed during the FP7 project Active. Is it working well? It would require a test.
