Abstract

This article describes considerations and decisions involved in creating an archive for contemporary literary texts in Spanish as a project that demands attention to cultural factors and thus must be approached from a disciplinary point of view The international nature of such an enterprise makes it necessary to take into account attitudes, conditions, and circumstances of the diverse Hispanic world. An initiative for such a venture is described. Direct enquiries to Hispanic authors, heirs, and publishers revealed the areas in which major problems must be overcome. (i) Procuring texts from diverse sources; (ii) attitudes and misgivings of copyright holders authorized to grant rights for reproduction and distribution of texts, (iii) legal activities that take into account international law as well as cultural sensitivity; (iv) exclusivity, an issue which requires a well-thought-out philosophy about the repository's purpose, (v) perpetuity of authorization; (vi) royalties, and (vii) discipline-specific Production Problems. The article concludes with a discussion of prospects for the future if scholars are to have the benefits of contemporary literary texts in Spanish
