Abstract
Abstract: The title compound was prepared by high temperature techniques. An X-ray diffraction study of a single crystal has identified a new structure type with composition Tm8S11, space group Cmcm; Z = 4;a = 3.7486(4), b = 12.6160(8), c = 34.932(3) Å. The coordination for Tm atoms is distorted octahedra, distorted trigonal prisms or capped trigonal prisms. These types of coordination are quite common for rare-earth chalcogenides. The magnetic susceptibility measurements show that all Tm atoms in Tm8S11 have a valence of +3 and there are eight delocalized electrons per cell.
