Abstract

Abstract: A series of phases of the type Pt5Ln were prepared by reacting platinum with the oxides of the lanthanides, from lanthanum to thulium, in a hydrogen atmosphere. X-ray investigations showed that three related structure types occur. The compounds with the lighter lanthanides form the Cu5Ca-structure, whereas for those with the heavier members of the lanthanides new but similar structures are observed. These structure changes are discussed in detail. The Pt3Ln-phases from holmium to lutetium, prepared in a similar way, are isostructural with Cu3Au.
