Abstract

Gamma spectrometry using a hyper-pure Ge detector has been performed on 26 samples of Aegean volcanic tephras. The samples were derived from quarries on the volcanic islands of Santorini and Yiali, from Nisyros, as well as from the islands of Kos and Rhodes. In the latter two cases mainly from on top of Minoan settlements of the 2nd millenium B.C. Choice of the most appropriate of the measured component radionuclides for identification of significant groupings of the tephra samples is assessed. The measurements clearly distinguish the Santorini samples from the Yiali samples. Of the two samples from Kos, one clearly has radionuclide characteristics of the Santorini group while the other is identified with the Yali group.
