The American Geophysical Union (AGU) is an international non-profit scientific association with over 50,000 members. Established in 1919 as a committee within the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences, AGU was independently incorporated in 1972.
Since its founding, AGU is dedicated to furthering the sciences of geophysics through the individual efforts of its members and in cooperation with other national and international scientific organizations. These goals are met through publishing scientific journals and other technical publications (including Eos, a weekly newspaper, and the Journal of Geophysical Research[1]), sponsoring scientific meetings of various sizes throughout the year and a variety of other educational and scientific activities. It also honors outstanding contributions to the advancement of the geophysical sciences, through awards and medals[2].

The administration of the American Geophysical Union
The American Geophysical Union is directed through four main structures[4]:
- The Board of directors (15 persons) is responsible for business affairs
- The Executive committee (President, President-elect, General Secretary, the International Secretary, and Past President) is in charge of everyday leadership
- The AGU Council heads scientific affairs of the Union. It is chaired by the Union President-elect
- The Council Leadership Team, composed of the AGU President-elect, a Vice-Chair and three other members elected from amongst the Council.
