Abstract
This deliverable addresses issues surrounding the possible standardization of user interfaces and user interface design. First the term user interface is defined and several possible definitions are discussed. Next issues regarding standards are introduced\, : definition of terms, relationships between different types of standards, problems with standards. Next, a User Interface Reference Model, proposed as a basis for the development of standards and an architecture are introduced, followed by a presentation of current technology issues. Then the special requirements for the user interface of a learning system are described, followed by a more detailed analysis of the user interface as a communication channel. Finally, some conclusions are presented with regards to the current state of the art in standardization and some tentative predictions for the future.
