Abstract

This study was conducted to examine outcomes of day care for the demented elderly in Korea by assessing changes in their cognitive function and agitated behaviors over time. In one group the repeated measures design was used. The data were collected from March 1999 to August 1999, with an initial sample size of 22 at the baseline time point. The demented elderly cognitive function was maintained as stable during the 10‐week study period, while their agitated behaviors increased over time. These results indicated the further need to examine the factors affecting the problematic behaviors. This pilot study showed that day‐care programs may be effective in maintaining the stability of cognitive function in the mildly to moderately demented elderly in Korea. Further investigation of effective behavioral modification within the day‐care setting might encourage positive governmental support for day‐care programs for the demented population in Korea.

<p>This study was conducted to examine outcomes of day care for the demented elderly in Korea by assessing changes in their cognitive function and agitated behaviors over time. Further investigation of effective behavioral modification within the day‐care setting might encourage positive governmental support for day‐care programs for the demented population in Korea.</p>
