Abstract

PURPOSE: To describe the occurrence of interlenticular opacification in association with asymmetric haptic fixation of the anterior intraocular lens in a patient who had two intraocular lenses (IOLs) inserted for axial hyperopia. DESIGN: Observational case report. METHODS: An 83-year-old patient underwent uncomplicated cataract extraction and piggyback IOL insertion. The posterior IOL was placed within the capsule, but one of the haptics of the anterior IOL was inadvertently placed in the ciliary sulcus and the other in the capsule. RESULTS: Interlenticular opacification was localized to the interlenticular area near the anterior lens haptic placed within the capsule and absent from the interlenticular area near the anterior lens haptic fixated in the ciliary sulcus. CONCLUSION: This case report supports the idea that sulcus placement of the anterior IOL helps to prevent interlenticular opacification.

<EA>PURPOSE: To describe the occurrence of interlenticular opacification in association with asymmetric haptic fixation of the anterior intraocular lens in a patient who had two intraocular lenses (IOLs) inserted for axial hyperopia. CONCLUSION: This case report supports the idea that sulcus placement of the anterior IOL helps to prevent interlenticular opacification.</EA>
