Abstract

HIV has been associated with increased risks of certain kinds of malignancies. Cancer of the cervix is quite common in our environment and has been classified as an AIDS-defining malignancy in some countries. The objective of our study is to determine the prevalence of HIV sero-prevalence among patients attending our clinics with histologically confirmed Cancer of the Cervix.

The objective of our study is to determine the prevalence of HIV sero-prevalence among patients attending our clinics with histologically confirmed Cancer of the Cervix.</AbstractText>
<AbstractText Label="METHODS" NlmCategory="METHODS">All records of patients diagnosed with histologically confirmed Cancer of the Cervix in our clinic over a three-year period (2005 - 2007) were reviewed. Details included HIV status of the patients. Results were analyzed to determine the sero-prevalence of HIV among the patients</AbstractText>
<AbstractText Label="RESULTS" NlmCategory="RESULTS">221 patients were seen during the period with age ranged between 29 and 85 years with a mean value of 55.08. More than 80% of the patients had disease stages of 2b and above. Only 6 patients (2.7%) were positive. The rest were negative.</AbstractText>
<AbstractText Label="CONCLUSION" NlmCategory="CONCLUSIONS">The prevalence of HIV among patients with cancer of the cervix in our clinic is low compared to results from some other places in Africa.</AbstractText>
