Summary: Generality:Cardiac disease is frequently responsible for sudden death in sport Age is the most useful variable to predict the cause of sudden death in athletes Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, congenital anomalies of coronary arteries, myocarditis and arrythmogenic right ventncular dysplasia are often implicated in the under 35 year olds. After this age. sudden deaths in sport are often due to ischemic heart diseaseDesign:A retrospective study took the census of exercise-related sudden death cases during 1994 in France. All French emergency units were contactedResults:We obtained a response rate of 58%. Only 36 deaths were reported. The rate of sudden cardiac death during sporting activity was 78%: 81% of victims were over 35 years old. Ventricular fibrillation represented the final pathway for death in 46% of cases and 13% of deaths were observed during recovery. Fifty seven percent of victims had either underlying cardiac diseases, a history of sudden death in relatives, or chest pain. This inquiry allowed us to expect 300 sudden deaths in sport each year in FranceConclusion:Most of these deaths were foreseeable. Continued education of athletes and adapted training appear to be the best way to help reduce the frequency of sudden death in sport. This retrospective study has not confirmed postulated predictions of sudden death in sport incidence. Unfortunately, statistical points prevent this study from doubting the usual advanced averages concerning sudden death in sport.

Parmi elles, les plus fréquemment rencontrées sont l'athérosclérose coronarienne après 35 ans. la cardiomyopathie hypertrophique. les anomalies congénitales des artères coronaires, les myocardites et la dysplasie arythmogène du ventricule droit chez les plus jeunes.Patients et méthodes:Tous les Services d'aide médicale d'urgence et les Services mobiles d'urgence et de réanimation français ont été contactés dans le cadre d'une enquête rétrospective portant sur l'année 1994. ayant pour but de recenser les cas de MSS.Résultats:Le taux de réponsea été de 58 % Seulement 36 décès ont été rapportés : 78% d'entre eux étaient des MSS et 81 % des victimes avaient plus de 35 ans. Une fibrillation ventriculaire a été constatée dans 46 % des cas et 13 % des décès sont survenus pendant la phase de récupération. All French emergency units were contacted</ce:simple-para></ce:abstract-sec><ce:abstract-sec><ce:section-title>Results:</ce:section-title><ce:simple-para>We obtained a response rate of 58%. Only 36 deaths were reported. The rate of sudden cardiac death during sporting activity was 78%: 81% of victims were over 35 years old. Ventricular fibrillation represented the final pathway for death in 46% of cases and 13% of deaths were observed during recovery. Fifty seven percent of victims had either underlying cardiac diseases, a history of sudden death in relatives, or chest pain. This inquiry allowed us to expect 300 sudden deaths in sport each year in France</ce:simple-para></ce:abstract-sec><ce:abstract-sec><ce:section-title>Conclusion:</ce:section-title><ce:simple-para>Most of these deaths were foreseeable. Continued education of athletes and adapted training appear to be the best way to help reduce the frequency of sudden death in sport. This retrospective study has not confirmed postulated predictions of sudden death in sport incidence. After this age. sudden deaths in sport are often due to ischemic heart diseaseDesign:A retrospective study took the census of exercise-related sudden death cases during 1994 in France. All French emergency units were contactedResults:We obtained a response rate of 58%. Only 36 deaths were reported. The rate of sudden cardiac death during sporting activity was 78%: 81% of victims were over 35 years old. Ventricular fibrillation represented the final pathway for death in 46% of cases and 13% of deaths were observed during recovery. Fifty seven percent of victims had either underlying cardiac diseases, a history of sudden death in relatives, or chest pain. This inquiry allowed us to expect 300 sudden deaths in sport each year in FranceConclusion:Most of these deaths were foreseeable. Continued education of athletes and adapted training appear to be the best way to help reduce the frequency of sudden death in sport. This retrospective study has not confirmed postulated predictions of sudden death in sport incidence. Unfortunately, statistical points prevent this study from doubting the usual advanced averages concerning sudden death in sport.</abstract><abstract lang="fr">Resume: Généralités:La mort subite chez le sportif (MSS) est très souvent en relation avec une pathologie cardiovasculaire. Parmi elles, les plus fréquemment rencontrées sont l'athérosclérose coronarienne après 35 ans. la cardiomyopathie hypertrophique. les anomalies congénitales des artères coronaires, les myocardites et la dysplasie arythmogène du ventricule droit chez les plus jeunes.Patients et méthodes:Tous les Services d'aide médicale d'urgence et les Services mobiles d'urgence et de réanimation français ont été contactés dans le cadre d'une enquête rétrospective portant sur l'année 1994. ayant pour but de recenser les cas de MSS.Résultats:Le taux de réponsea été de 58 % Seulement 36 décès ont été rapportés : 78% d'entre eux étaient des MSS et 81 % des victimes avaient plus de 35 ans. Une fibrillation ventriculaire a été constatée dans 46 % des cas et 13 % des décès sont survenus pendant la phase de récupération. Cinquantesept pour cent des victimes de MSS présentaient soit des antécédents de pathologies cardiaques personnelles, soit des antécédents de mort subite d'un ascendant, soit des douleurs angineuses peu de temps avant leur décès. Cette enquête permet d'estimer à 300 le nombre de cas de MSS survenant chaque année en France.Conclusion:Un grand nombre de décès étaient prévisibles. La lutte contre la MSS doit reposer sur une politique préventive, permettant de repérer, de surveiller et d'adapter l'entraînement physique des sujets à risque.
