Abstract

Abstract: Micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) and time-resolved laser-induced spectrofluorometry (TRLIS) have been used to study the interaction between the uranyl ion (UO2+2) and sodium alkylsulfate micelles. The studies were performed at a constant pH and various uranium concentrations. It has been found that the uranyl ion is rejected by an ultrafiltration membrane due to the ion's strong interaction with the micellar surface. The association constant of UO2+2 to dodecyl and tetradecyl sulfate micelles was investigated. Assuming that adsorption in the Stern layer is described by a Langmuir isotherm, ion exchange constants were found to be significantly higher than those obtained for other divalent ions belonging to the d-block (Cu2+, Co2+). The influence of the surfactant chain length upon ion exchange constants of uranium has also been stressed. A limiting rejection rate has been presented and an expression has been proposed.
