Abstract

Abstract: One thousand six hundred and twenty masticatory tests were conducted on 12 edentulous subjects to study the influence of sixteen denture base forms on the masticatory effectiveness of dentures. In general, reduction in the extension of upper and lower denture bases in different areas failed to affect the chewing ability of the subjects. Significant reductions in performance appeared only when an extensive reduction was made on the over-all border of the lower denture base. However, over-all extensive reductions of both the upper and lower denture bases resulted in insignificant performance reductions, and masticatory performance ratios were better than when only the lower denture base was reduced. Subjects with a previous denture experience possessed significantly better ability to chew the test food than the subjects who had had no previous denture experience.

<ce:simple-para>One thousand six hundred and twenty masticatory tests were conducted on 12 edentulous subjects to study the influence of sixteen denture base forms on the masticatory effectiveness of dentures. Subjects with a previous denture experience possessed significantly better ability to chew the test food than the subjects who had had no previous denture experience.</ce:simple-para>
