Abstract

Iannis Xenakis is perhaps the most original figure of contemporary music. Works like Metastaseis, Nuits, Psappha or Thalleïn open a totally new sound universe. His musical and theoretical thought on art and on its relationship to the world shakes all what seems fixed forever. Worrying about himself and about the others, he never stopped to print this rare sensibility into the notes themselves. This introduction to his universe was first published as a book in 1996 (P.O Editions). It has been updated in 2004. It offers a synthesis of the author’s researches on Xenakis, synthesis which is written for the specialist as also for the amateur.
