Abstract
At the end of XIX century Venetum is characterized by economical regression and social stillness. It is also a stronghold ofthe intransigent current ofthe "Opera dei Congressi" which did not care much for social problems. But since 1880, parochial committees and catholic groups activate workmen's and peasants'associations of mutual help. First of all in the northern area of Vicenza province and then all over Venetum. After the publication of Rerum Novarum people like Don Cerrutti and Don Bellio, together with catholic groups, founded catholic banks and "Casse Rurali" (Lit. Rural Banks, i.e.: Chain of Cooperative Credit Institutions) which put Venetum at the first place in the cooperation field.
