Abstract

Malraux himself used the metaphor of the opera (music and libretto) to describe his novels, while it appears that as the characters in his novels multiply and as their narratives complexify, the analogy becomes more and more exact. A close reading of "Man's Hope" reveals it to be constructed along musical principles defining three movements-and linking epic scope to operatic breath.
