Abstract

This study illustrates how research can clarify the vocal therapy practice in the field of the spoken and sung voice carrying power. The vocal effectiveness means a voice: 1) which carries 2) without effort. It's a very frequent demand of the patients with spoken and sung voice disorders coming by the voice therapist. It is a question of " making the effort not to take it " (Rameau, 1760). 1) "Make the effort" means a specific vocal gesture: a laryngeal lowering is in connection with the vocal carrying power, as show measurements from median sagittal slices of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (physiological analysis). These measures are connected to the “singing formant” (acoustic analysis), that is an intensification of energy always situated near 3000Hz whatever the pitch or the vowel sung by a professional opera singer. This one is a real signature of a voice which carries without effort. 2) "...not to take it" means that this vocal gesture corresponds to a sound containing frequencies for which the ear is sensitive at most (3000Hz, perceptive analysis). These scientific knowledge have important consequences in rehabilitation: in particular, one mustn't " force on the intensity " but " play with the timbre " instead of getting back this one by the adduction of vocal folds: a larynx in moderately low position will facilitate this phenomenon.
