Abstract

In addition to musicological and aesthetical approaches - both of which study Art for Art's sake - a sociological look at lyric art (i.e. vocal music) cannot avoid a geographical analysis with its bonds to territory and identity. Our exhaustive inventory of lyric art performances in Provence shows that within a radius of eighty kilometres no day goes by without a lyric art performance, mostly outside the opera houses. Unlike the popular representation of Provence – lavender, pastis and cicadas – the diffusion of lyric art is moreover not limited to Summer. It is indeed part of the historical roots of Provence, the South of France region where the proximity with lyric voices is particularly popular. By underlining the paradox between the true Provencal identity and its advertised image, we raise again the issue of elitism in the lyric art field, in particular if we take into account the large variety of the non-institutional forms of lyric art, beyond the sole institutional form : opera.
