Abstract

This collection of articles follows the international symposium "Cycle et collection", in November 2006. The existence of cycles in literature is well-known: "worlds in a novel", they are characterized by their length, their encyclopedic perspective, their desire for totality; but their problematic relation with collections has been overlooked. Still, "cyclic manuscripts" exist, which contain (for amateurs) separate works in a same space; they are similar to frescoes, whose cycle may be destroyed. Bringing together medievalists, modernists, historians and art historians, confronting canonical literature and popular literature, this volume examines the notions of cycle and collection, in their mutual relation, from the Middle Ages and the collections of manuscripts in Latin, or medieval "cycles" (among which the Continuations of Chrétien de Troyes's Conte du Graal) up to the 19th novel (Balzac, Zola) and arts (orientalism in England), then Proust and Volodine; including books by travelers and poets in the Ancient Japan, adventure novels and children literature, drama, cinema (Rohmer), opera (Wagner). The volume contains an introduction, written with Christophe Pradeau and Anne Besson (pp. 7-14), and an article entitled " Le cycle du savoir : modèle encyclopédique et théorie chez Proust et Broch ", p. 73-91.
