Abstract

The Magnificat is one of the NT-texts, to whom the scientific research and practical interpretation have paid a lot of attention during all the times, not only because it is the prayer of Jesus' Mother, but also because it is a prayer, which according to the content, belongs to the OT but was transmitted in the NT. To explain this situation are mentioned first (I) the positions of research, which understand the magnificat as a Song of Elisabeth, a Jewish eschatological hymn, a Christian song or a composition of Luke. Then (II) comparing with the very related Hanna-Song from 1 Sam 2 and Ps 113 the thesis is uphold, that the Magnificat is a Jewish prayer prayed by mothers after the birth of their first child, possibly spoken also before the birth. Nowadays Arabic prayers prove this view. The including of the hymn in the NT happened thanks to Jewish Christians.
