Abstract
Un élément clé de la défense qu'a présentée Ernest Gellner pour son modèle segmentariste de l'organisation politique des Berbères a été sa revendication, comme origine de sa propre théorie, de l'oeuvre de l'ethnologue français du dix-neuvième siècle, Emile Masqueray, qui a été cité par Durkheim à l'appui de son concepte d'"organisation sociale segmentaire". La revendication de Gellner faisait supposer que sa théorie s'appliquait aux Berbères algériens aussi bien que marocains et que Masqueray et ses prédécesseurs devraient être considérés comme des pionniers de la théorie segmentariste plutôt que comme les auteurs d'une vision distincte et rivale. L'A. soutient que la lecture qu'a fait Gellner de ces auteurs était erronée, que la manière dont ils abordaient la vie politique des Berbères était profondément différente de la perspective segmentariste qui l'a supplantée, et que l'interprétation qu'a fait Durkheim de leurs analyses était fausse et sans fondement.
