Abstract

Although a mature industry, the printing industry has always been and is now in reality a technology-intensive sector. Technology strategy is now a key element in a large printing company's success. Toppan Printing Company is one such large firm. It is based in Japan, and it has continually grown during the postwar period. Toppan's strategy combines close attention to customer needs, upstream and downstream integration, and diversification into related business areas. A major ingredient in Toppan's success is an intense and high-level commitment to technology. Technological innovation is an essential part of practically all parts of its business. Of particular importance is the growing role of electronics and computer-based systems in Toppan's products and processes. Toppan is participating in and is anticipating a strategically a post-industrial, information-based age.
