Abstract
L'intensité de l'urbanisation justifie un examen détaillé de la France en villes. Selon les échelles considérées, son armature urbaine se présente sous des formes variées. L'analyse différencie la situation exceptionnelle de la capitale, les grandes métropoles régionales, les métropoles régionales intermédiaires, les villes moyennes et les villes nouvelles. Cette France en villes commence le XXIe siècle dans un contexte de gouvernance fondamentalement nouveau. La décentralisation a contribué à une véritable révolution urbaine, jusqu'à faire des villes des acteurs économiques majeurs. Les étapes de l'intercommunalité fondent une nouvelle géographie de la France en villes, tandis que la question du développement durable appelle un renouvellement des objectifs et des méthodes. Les processus et l'évolution des idées concernant les villes ne signifient nullement des dynamiques homothétiques dans la France des villes. Bien au contraire, à toutes les échelles, s'effectuent de multiples recompositions qu'il importe d'analyser.
