Abstract

The contemporary city is marked by the dominance of the automobile and urban sprawl. It is more than ever living at the rate of continuous concatenation of activities. These trends affect deeply the socio-spatial organization of the city and make complex capture and understanding of travel behavior of consumers. Shopping trips generate considerable flows of vehicles and are made primarily using the personal automobile. On average 60% of the purchases of the households are made by car, and up to 80% when they are carried out in a hypermarket. However, heavy use of the automobile involves issues in terms of sustainable mobility. This research therefore attempts, from the example of Le Havre, to explain the dependence on cars for shopping and to assess the impact in terms of inequality and access to places of commerce. It intends to study consumer mechanized behavior by analysing shopping trips in the context of 'chains of journeys' with other motives involved. The research is based on an investigation carried out on a sample of 1060 families. The results reveal the importance of trips organized as part of a chain particularly in households where the mother is working. The wide spread of their work places limits the use of local shopping centres, favouring retail outlets which lie along the route of their journey. Visiting shops is determined above all by the patterns of places used by the parents for their activities as well as those of the children which are generally far away from the family residence. To combine these trips it is impossible to avoid using the car. The study highlights the difficulty of a sustainable buying mobility which results in the commercial underequipment of sensitive urban areas and the difficulty for people in these neighbourhoods to reach outlying commercial centers in the absence of good public transport services.
