Abstract
A.D. 799 Popc Leo III, fleeing from Rome, sought the help of Charlemagne. At Paderborn, a residence of the latter, he seems to have negotiated the foundation of the Saxonian bishoprics and the imperial coronation in the following year. The contemporary sources are quite tententious and difer from each other in certain important details. The reconstruction of what has happened in that year is therefore largely fruit of critical interpretation.
