Abstract
This article deals with one specific type of epic which I suggest calling the "refounding epic", since it has been the means historically of founding anew communities by inventing new political solutions for major historical crises. The Iliad, the Song of Roland and the Hogen and Heiji monogatari can be shown to have been such refounding epics (Goyet, 2006). In the wake of recent scholarship that considers that the epic does exist in the modern era, the current question is under what conditions can the refounding epic exist in the modern and contemporary world. There seems to be three necessary conditions. The refounding epic must be popular, political and "polyphonic" (Bakhtin) to accomplish what rational thought cannot do.
