Abstract

Background. Seasonal affective disorders (SAD) are mainly found during the lightless months of the year, thus creating a well-defined subgroup of the affective spectrum disorders. Within the last years the occurence of SAD has been described more frequently in children and adolescents. SAD. Symptoms show to be different from those of characteristic affective disorders as well in adulthood as in children and adolescents. SAD found to be ameliorated with help of light therapy. Correlations to eating disorders as well as to ADHD are assumed within children and adolescents. Neurobiological deviations underlying the disorders could not be revealed yet. Serotonergic, dopaminergic as well as genetic influences are assumed to play a role. Conclusion. As prevalence of SAD has risen in children and adolescents, the awareness of the disorder should be sharpened in pediatric and child psychiatric institutions.
