Mavromichalis* *Laboratory of 2 nd Paediatric Department University Hospital of Ioannina, Greece Background: To investigate: 1. If DNA polymorphisms at the a 2 macroglobulin gene (A2M) are associated with chronic uveitis. 2. The incidence of ACE gene insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphisms genotypes in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (J.I.A.) and the involvement in inflammatory mechanism of chronic uveitis Material and methods: We genotyped (polymerase chain reaction ) 30 patients, 12 male and 18 female with J.I.A. for the a 2 -macroglobulin (5 bp deletion/insertion) polymorphisms. The incidence of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) gene I/D polymorphism genotypes was determined in the same patients and compared to that in 304 healthy controls using polymerase chain reaction. All the patients fulfil the criteria of American College of Rheumatology (ACR) for the disease. Nine had polyarthritis and 21 oligoarthritis. Sixteen of the patients presented with chronic uveitis. Results: Gene and genotype frequencies The study was conducted in order to identify risk indicators for atherosclerosis in children with a positive family history of coronary heart disease (CHD), or hyperlipidemia. Patients and methods: We evaluated serum levels of total cholesterol (TC), low density cholesterol (LDL-C), high density cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG), apolipoprotein B100 (ApoB100), apolipoprotein A1 (Apo A1) and lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] in a group of 196 and 72 children with positive family history of CHD, and hyperlipidemia (group A1, A2, respectively) Lipid profile values in each group were compared to those of a control group of 214 children of comparable age (group B) Group A1 consisted of 113 boys and 83 girls and group A2 of 45 boys and 27 girls with mean age 10·51(±5·37) and 9·15(±4·45) years, respectively. Group B consisted of 119 boys and 95 girls with mean age 10·48(±5·39) years. Results: Significant differences were noted in the concentrations of TC, LDL-C and Lp(a) between children of group A1 and controls . Children in group A2 had significantly higher concentrations of TC, LDL-C, TG, ApoB100 and lower concentrations of Apo A1 compared with controls</title>

<title>Belarus Background: Resistance to medicines therapy observing in some cerebrovascular diseases causes the search of new treatment methods Brain ischemia is characterized by disturbances of microcirculation, redox and hydro-ion metabolism. This work deals with study of cerebral microhemodynamics (MHD), hydro-ion balance, acid-base status (ABS), blood oxygen transport (BOT) in intravenous laser irradiation of blood (ILIB) with helium-neon laser (HNL) after experimental local ischemia of brain (LIB) Materials and methods: LIB was made by bilateral 3-hours occlusion of common carotid arteries under thiopental anesthesia . Radiation power of light guide inserted in otic vein was 2·5 mW. Rabbits with LIB underwent by 10-min exposure for 5 days. The K + , Na + concentration was investigated in blood and brain parts with flame photometry. Brain water content was determined by dry-wet weight method. Cerebral microhemodynamics (MHD) indexes were studied on superficial brain structures with speckl-optical method after single preventive ILIB. ABS and BOT parameters (actual acidity, carbon dioxide and oxygen tension, hydrocarbonates concentration, bases excess, oxygen hemoglobin saturation, oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve (ODC)) were measured by gas analyzer in venous blood taken from external jugular vein after the 5 th ILIB procedures. Results: Postischemic period was characterized by microcirculation disturbances, metabolic acidosis, ionic misbalance and edema in ischemic brain region with worsening of BOT (P > 0·01). ILIB application after LIB modeling contributed for normalizing of water content, ABS findings. It was revealed tendency to BOT improving compared to controls</title>

<title>Greece Thus, the resistance to both cyclic nucleotides could be a basic defect accounting for the reduced responses to all the physiological anti-aggregating agents in central obesity. 110 Antithrombotic and anti-platelet actions of hypolipemic drugs in patients with hypercholesterolemia M There is evidence that statins may have anticoagulant and anti-platelet effects within a few weeks of treatment. Data on similar actions of fibrates are scarce. The aim of the study was to determine whether a 28-day treatment with simvastatin or fenofibrate might have an influence on coagulation and platelet activation markers in high-risk patients Materials and methods: In a randomized, double-blind study, we compared markers of thrombin formation and platelet activation in patients with LDL cholesterol >130 mg/dL assigned to receive simvastatin (40 mg/d; n = 20) or micronized fenofibrate (160 mg/d; n = 22) for 28 days. Before and after the treatment we measured thrombin-antithrombin complexes (TAT) and bthromboglobulin (bTG) levels in plasma and blood obtained every 30 seconds from standardized skin incisions, in addition to plasma soluble P-selectin and CD40 ligand (sCD40L) levels. Results: Simvastatin and fenofibrate lowered plasma TAT concentrations (from 4·8 to 2·4 mg</title>
