Leiden had taken the lead in  with Petrus Bertius.  The municipal library of Augsburg, which in  had been the fi rst to publish a separate catalogue of manuscripts, followed in  .  Surely the most exten- sive catalogue is the one compiled of the Bodleian Library by Thomas James in  .  The Leiden catalogue comprises about  ,  titles, that of Augsburg about  ,  titles and the Bodley catalogue approximately  ,  titles. In  the University Library of Utrecht published a list of its almost  ,  books. In  the municipal library of Amsterdam had a catalogue printed comprising nearly  titles. Meanwhile Leiden was already in need of a second version which was edited by Daniël Heinsius. The other previously mentioned libraries also published new, enlarged versions of their catalogues prior to  .  Quaerendo 436_169-210 1/1/04 6:47 AM Page 169

Michiels, ‘Andreas (Desselius, Dries(sens)), Valerius’, in: NBW , vol.  (Brussels  ), cols.  -  . Later on we hope to examine Andreas’s classi fi cation in greater detail. Louvain started its library in a professional way. The approximately  ,  titles were, according to the prevailing standards, systematically described and special attention was paid to the division into subjects. The key fi gures in the practical realization of the library, Erycius Puteanus and Valerius Andreas, were no newcomers in the fi eld of books. They were both academics and had already made their mark in the book and library world. Puteanus had been to Italy to study, in Milan he had been invited by cardinal Federico Borromeo to assist in the foundation of his Bibliotheca Ambrosiana and he was a regular guest in the library of Giovanni Vincenzo Pinelli, where he met Peiresc among others.  He had been recalled to Louvain to succeed the deceased Justus Lipsius and had developed into a celebrated scholar within a very short time. With the support from the archdukes he had taken up his residence in the castle on Mount Caesar (Keizersberg) where he had apparently made an attempt to establish a kind of private press .  As a jurist, Hebraist and orientalist, Valerius Andreas was a scholar with a well-established reputation. With his Bibliotheca Belgica , published in  , of which he edited an enlarged edition in  , he had acquired a permanent standing as a bibliographer. As a young man and pupil of the Antwerp Jesuit André Schott he had published already in  , and augmented in  , a bio-biblio- graphy of Spanish authors which he dedicated to his friend Aubertus Miraeus (see  ). A year before the opening of the Central Library he laid the founda- tions for the historiography of the University of Louvain with his Fasti academici studii generalis lovaniensis .  In his opening address, held on  October  , which is printed at the begin- ning of the catalogue, he discussed the various areas of study, but he also elu- cidated how a library should be organized. Of crucial importance for the col- lection were the bequests from the wealthy Antwerp canon Laurentius Beyerlinck, Quaerendo 436_169-210 1/1/04 6:47 AM Page 170

Auspicia bibliothecae   On Adrianus Romanus (  -  ) see Paul Bockstaele, ‘Roomen (Romanus, Romain), Adriaan (Adrianus) van’, in: NBW , vol.  (Brussels  ), cols.  -  . Beyerlinck (  -  ), donated  chie fl y theological and historical works; see on him Jozef IJsewijn, ‘Beyerlinck, Laurentius’, in: NBW , vol.  (Brussels  ), cols.  -  . deceased in  , and Jacobus Romanus, son of the renowned mathematician Adrianus. Jacobus had died in  and together with his own books he also donated the library of his father, a basic collection of mathematics and medi- cine.  In the catalogue both provenances are marked with a B and an R respec- tively, following the relevant entry. Andreas, however, did not only register these large founding collections but he also recorded the names of the donators who presented one or a few books to the young institution. Whether they did this out of a wry sense of obligation, with warm sympathy or by cold calculation, is di ffi cult to ascertain without dis- torting the bare facts. Anyway, the catalogue surely represents an interesting piece of library history and forms a valuable document for the history of the Central Library of Louvain. In all  names, with  titles, altogether comprising  volumes, are passed in review. Most of them donate only one single book, one single title,  out of  (two gentlemen donate jointly) or well over three-quarters of the number of donators, but there is a considerable di ff erence between the quarto volume presented by De Coninck (see  ) and the sumptuously illustrated large folio volume which was donated by Del’ Plano (see  ), rector of the Jesuit col- lege in Louvain. The book was, however, compiled by a (possibly lower-rank- ing) confrère. The  donators who donated only one title, also stuck to one book only, even though this was, apart from De Coninck, a folio-size volume. True, Libertus van Houthem (see  ) made a present of this work by Samuel Loyaerts which comprised six volumes, but they were ‘only’ small books in- octavo. De Coninck and Van Houthem were both priors in a Louvain monastery, St Martin’s Dale and St Gertrude respectively. The abbot of the Cistercian abbey of Aulne, Edmond Jouvent (see  ), no doubt brought along a larger pile of books. The four titles he provided consisted of twenty-one volumes in-folio, in absolute fi gures the most generous donation. We can hardly conclude from this that the darkly clothed gentlemen who (mostly in their gowns perhaps) made their way to the reception room while holding just one book under their arm, were less kindly disposed towards the library than those who, equally darkly clothed – and some of them sporting a little purple in between their clothing – had to have the pile of books delivered by their assistant or a courier. Yet is it obvious that, considering their personal wealth, the one benefactor was more generous than the other. This has of course always been the case, but it is a pity that owing to the inadequacy of available sources this practice cannot be explained in greater detail. It goes without Quaerendo 436_169-210 1/1/04 6:47 AM Page 171

 C  C   Within the scope of the present article no evaluation of book prices and incomes could be made.  On Gevartius, see Marcel Hoc, Le déclin de l’humanisme belge. Etude sur Jean-Gaspard Gevaerts, philologue et poète (  -  ) (Brussels  ); on Miraeus, see Carlo de Clerq, ‘Miraeus (Mire), Aubertus Junior (le)’, in: NBW , vol.  (Brussels  ), cols.  -  . Miraeus published in  Primordia Bibliotheca Antverpensiensis , the fi rst catalogue of the Antwerp municipal library to which he himself and Gevartius and Valerius Andreas also donated books; see De Nottebohmzaal. Boek en mecenaat (Antwerp  ), pp.  ,  no.  &  no.  &  no.  (also, almost obviously, Balthasar Moretus, see nos.  -  ).  Cf. Hugh Wm. Davies, Catalogue of a Collection of Early French Books in the Library of C. Fairfax Murray (London  ; repr.), nos.  &  , Froissart & Monstrelet,  and  vols. respectively. These are early editions of around  , but the later editions comprise nearly the same number of volumes. For Froissart see e.g. also Ruth Mortimer, Harvard College Library. Department of Printing and Graphic Arts. Catalogue of Books and Manuscripts. Part I: French  th Century Books (Cambridge, Mass.  ), pp.  -  . saying that within society they were all well-o ff gentlemen who were guaran- teed a comfortable income.  Indeed, apart from fur-trimmed collars, a little purple here and there and a few red braids, it was not a colourful group of people who remembered the new library with a gift in kind. The friends from the very beginning are quite those as might be expected and they give a clear picture of the circle in which the institution functioned. Obviously there are rectors, members of the acade- mic community and, conspicuously, some university o ffi cials. Some among them have acquired lasting fame, others have disappeared as colourless names amid the documents. It is very well possible that some of those unknown persons dominated the scene at the time and (conversely) their presence was more appre- ciated than that of those who were saved from oblivion by their works. Of the  donators  were academics, or  %, more than half of whom were theo- logians. They donated  ,  % of the volumes. In addition there were abbots and priors of abbeys in Louvain and elsewhere who usually maintained strong relations with the university. Together they accounted for  ,  % of the dona- tors and provided  ,  % of the number of volumes. A small but yet not incon- spicuous group is constituted by the Louvain priests. Finally, there are only a few representatives of the secular authorities, interestingly a few printers as well, and a few individuals who were alumni, such as Gevartius (see  ), the learned Antwerp town clerk, and Miraeus (see  ), the biographer of Justus Lipsius among others and librarian of the archdukes.  The newly appointed librarian donated seven titles in ten volumes, all ori- entalia, and all but one from the sixteenth century. He taught Hebrew at the Collegium Trilingue, was married and had two daughters. Puteanus ‘only’ donated one book in fi ve volumes, an edition of an ancient French chronicle, no doubt from the sixteenth century and, judging by the fi ve volumes present, possibly incomplete.  In  , the year of publication of the catalogue, Puteanus apparently also press-ganged for a Bibliotheca Parthenica . Virginis Puri fi catae titulo sodalium muni fi ca pietate excitata, Lovanii apud Patres Societatis Iesu, [. . .] (Lovanii, Typis Everardi de Witte,  ), i.e. by the same printer who printed the catalogue of the Central Library (copy in the British Library). On p.  starts a text by Puteanus: ‘Erycii Puteani Paradoxum, quo D. Virginis puri fi catae sodales ad piorum librorum lectionem cohortatur. Argumentum. In disciplinis percipiendis aures oculorum loco esse, & oculos aurium’. Possibly this was connected with the approaching centenary,  -  , of the Society.  Lucianus Ceyssens, ‘Loyens, Hendrik’, in: NBW , vol.  (Brussels  ), col.  ; Pierre Delsaerdt, Suam quisque bibliothecam. Boekhandel en particulier boekenbezit aan de oude Leuvense universiteit  de-  de eeuw (Louvain  ), pp.  -  . The number is astonishing and, not only in the Southern Netherlands, exceptional. It is an intriguing question how Loyens managed to assemble so many books. The fact that he was a censor may not be irrelevant in this respect. The collection was sold by auction after his death in  .  On Jansenius’s share in the foundation of the library, see Jean Orcibal, Jansénius d’Ypres (  -  ) (Paris  ), p.  . It was he who in  had secured the Beyerlinck legacy. the Sodality of Our Lady, patronized by the Jesuits, in which Puteanus evi- dently played a major role.  In the little pamphlet that was published on this occasion, the names are recorded of those quorum pia liberalitate sacra haec biblio- theca surrexit, et librorum quibus adornata est . Puteanus features in it, of course, and Petrus Paulus and Philippus Gudelinus; Plemp is mentioned as well as Stockmans, De Baillencourt and Vincentius Corselius. Unfortunately there is no record of what they donated. There are also the names of professors who did not pre- sent a book to the Central Library: Antonius Perezius, the jurist, and actually one of the fi ve provisores of the library – but two other provisores are also con- spicuous for their absence: Michael van Ophem and Nicolaus Vernulaeus –, the physician Joannes Sturmius, Petrus Roose, another prominent jurist, as well as Henricus Loyens, who had fi rst studied theology, took his doctor’s degree in law in  and on his death in  left a library of  ,  [ sic ] titles. He was later, wrongfully, suspected of Jansenism.  On the other hand, among the earliest friends of the Central Library the friends of Jansenius are well represented. In  Jansenius had been appointed bishop of Ypres, but previously during his rectorate (  -  ) he had strongly devoted himself, together with his deputy rector and successor Petrus Stockmans, to the foundation of a Central Library.  Obviously among these friends were Petrus Stockmans and Libertus Fromondus, as were Cornelius de Pape and Gerard van Werm. There was the printer Joannes Oliverius, but especially Jacob Zegers who in  was to print ‘the’ Augustinus . The ‘opposition’ was repre- sented by Guillelmus ab Angelis and Antoine Dave. After the publication of the Augustinus (  ) Christian van Beusecom too manifested himself as an anti- Jansenist. These are a few fi ndings but it is di ffi cult to draw conclusions from them. The same applies to the printing places where the donated books were printed. The greater part is fairly recent, judging by the prevailing standards at the time when a book became less fast out of date and remained longer in stock at the Quaerendo 436_169-210 1/1/04 6:47 AM Page 173

 C  C   On Sébastien Cramoisy, see Henry-Jean Martin, ‘Un grand éditeur parisien au XVII e siècle, Sébastien Cramoisy’, in: id., Le livre français sous l’Ancien Régime (Paris  ), pp.  -  (previously published in Gutenberg Jahrbuch ,  (  ), pp.  -  ); id., Livre, pouvoirs et société à Paris au XVII e siècle (  -  ) ,  vols. (Geneva  ), passim.  I wish to emphasize the limited scope of the present article, but I do hope to return to this catalogue in greater detail at some point, again in the hope that this will not end up in a new Bibliotheca ( pr)omissa et latens . publisher’s. In addition to the not surprising presence of Antwerp as place of publication, with the house of Plantin as major supplier, there are especially works printed in Cologne and even more works originating from Paris. The random check is too limited to allow valid conclusions, but the fi ndings cannot be ignored. Cologne and Paris were of course large production centres in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and practically the most important sup- pliers of books for the Southern Netherlands. Paris is notable for the prominent appearance of Sébastien Cramoisy & Co. The question presents itself whether this is because of the literary genre in folio-size of which Cramoisy was the leading producer, or is the result of distribution channels, the presence of a factor or another distributor in Louvain or nearby, for instance.  However this may be, the list of donators presents an (incomplete) picture of the academic community in which the young Central Library operated. Unfor- tunately in  too much material was lost to complete this picture in a satis- factory way and to fully evaluate for instance the missing and present material. The books that were donated were all indispensable works for setting up a university library. Although their total volume was limited, they complemented the edifying collections of Romanus and Beyerlinck substantially, at least as far as could be ascertained within the limited scope of the present study.  Half of the donations consists of religious literature in the broadest sense. A large portion of this category is made up of Bible editions and Bible commen- taries (  % or  % respectively, of the whole), seven titles of which are written in oriental languages. Patristics and early Christian authors represent  ,  % of the whole or  ,  % within the category of theological literature. The only bib- liographical work, Possevino’s Bibliotheca selecta (no.  ), is also grouped among the religious literature as the fi rst Roman Catholic bibliography. The second large category comprises the juridical works, some  titles, four of which are on canon law, or altogether constituting  %. However small this category may be in absolute fi gures, it is still an important addition because, particularly in the fi eld of juridical literature, the entire collection was rather de fi cient. Medical literature was represented in these donations by a single book, the Ophtalmographia by Plemp (no.  ). Fortunately medicine did form a well-repre- sented category in the collection of Romanus. Quaerendo 436_169-210 1/1/04 6:47 AM Page 174

Auspicia bibliothecae   Edouard de Moreau, La bibliothèque de l’Université de Louvain  -  (Louvain  ), p.  , no.  .  De Moreau, La bibliothèque ,  , no.  ff .; see also Emile van Balberghe, Les manuscrits médié- vaux de l’Abbaye de Parc. Recueil d’articles (Documenta et Opuscula,  ; Brussels  ), pp.  -  .  By the closing of the university at the end of the  th century some books found their way With the one Plutarchus (no.  ) classical literature was equally poorly rationed among the donations, nor fi gured this category prominently in the rest of the collection, although it must be observed that especially with the octavo editions of both Beyerlinck and Romanus the foundation was laid for a potential expan- sion of this portion of the book production. Historica comprised ten titles, half of which deal with church history, thus con- stituting a little more than  ,  %. Justus Lipsius’s Opera could conceivably be included here; in the catalogue they are listed under historica &c. , together with a publication on numismatics and four geographical works. The impressive edition of Erasmus’s works is di ffi cult to categorize. To a large extent Erasmus’s oeuvre is of course of a theological-exegetical nature, but clearly the philological-humanistic component is no less important. This gives him a unique position among the authors of the works that constituted the earliest donations. Besides printed books a number of manuscripts were donated. The Speculum doctrinale by Vincent of Beauvais (no.  ) was destroyed in  . The catalogue dates it in the fi fteenth century, but Alphonse Dantier dated it much earlier in  and believed that it originated from the author’s own time.  Without fur- ther speci fi cations the Bible manuscript (no.  ) is di ffi cult to evaluate. The Sermones (no.  ) donated by abbot Masius cannot be dated either, but an in- triguing collection is, for a start, the plerosque alios tractatus Mss , the numerous other manuscripts donated by the prelate of the Park abbey. Unfortunately their con- tents can no longer be retrieved. The series of manuscripts that came from the Park abbey and were destroyed by fi re in  , had been acquired in the noto- rious sale of a large portion of the abbey library in  .  Finally, Ferdinand de Spoelberch donated two manuscripts, the Historia destructionis Troiae (no.  ) by Guido de Colonna and a contemporary philosophical treatise, De modo philoso- phandi veterum , by Filip Boelaert. The latter manuscript had already disappeared from Louvain before  . Of the listings in the entire catalogue from  only two books are at pre- sent located in the Louvain University Library. One of these was presented by one of the fi rst donators. They are De summo bono (Antwerp  ) by Leonardus Lessius which ended up in Louvain with the Beyerlinck bequest, and a part of the Bible (Antwerp, O ffi cina Plantiniana,  ) (no.  ) which was donated by Joannes Bernard, prior of Bois-Seigneur-Isaac (see  ). This copy shows that (at least part of ) the donations was provided with a supra-libros stamped in gold.  Quaerendo 436_169-210 1/1/04 6:47 AM Page 175

Prelates and councillors were approached with caution. Thus, archbishop Jacob Boonen contributed two grants and the former professor of law and member of the Privy Council, Gerardus Corselius (see nos.  -  ), made a considerable dona- tion. See Jan Roegiers, ‘Anima Academiae Bibliotheca.  jaar Centrale Bibliotheek’, in: Ex o ffi cina ,  (  ), p.  .  With thanks to Prof. Dr Jan Roegiers for his obliging critical reading and observations.  The text has been reproduced as it was recorded in the  edition. The numbering of the books has been added, which actually proved to be a hazardous undertaking: it is not always clear whether one or more titles are involved. Within the framework of the present publication it was not possible to check all titles bibliographically. Anyway, the total fi gure will remain a minimal count. In two instances Andreas indicates something like ‘and more books by the same person’. Abbreviations have not been resolved. where ‘idem’ or ‘eiusdem’ or something similar was entered, the name of the person or place-name is enclosed in round brackets, unless the complete form was an integral part of the text of the same donation. The name of the printer or publisher, which is only rarely mentioned in the catalogue, has been supplied between square brackets. In a few instances it was not possible to retrieve the publisher’s name. The format, which in the cat- alogue is usually printed as a sub-heading between the entries, has here been added at the end of the title description. The sixteenth-century printed books have been identi fi ed with a biblio- graphical reference. The other titles have been checked in the large and numerous small library catalogues. One title was checked in Cambridge (courtesy of Dr E.S. Leedham-Green). Not a few editions have become relatively rare now. Within the list of donators with their books, the dona- tors are referred to by the serial number not preceded by ‘no.’, the books are referred to with ‘no.’ The added numbering of the titles from the catalogue is based on a working copy in the tab- ularium of the University Library of Louvain. Generally it can be stated that theologians and jurists formed the majority among these earliest friends. The donations themselves also re fl ect this fact. The donators clearly preferred folio volumes as a symbol of their sincere or per- functory sympathy for the new institution.  The books they donated were one by one important texts belonging to the elementary stock of a scholarly library. Surely they fell into good hands with Valerius Andreas. His successors, how- ever, did not bring the painstaking beginning to further fruition. The Central Library had to wait until the eighteenth century before it was headed by equally scholarly meticulous and inspiring librarians in the persons of the polygraph, founder of the academic printing o ffi ce and later bishop Corneille François de Nelis (  -  ), the bibliographer Jean-Noël Paquot (  -  ) and the learned bibliophile Jan Frans van de Velde (  -  ).       .
