Abstract

Fresh waters in lakes, ponds, rivers, estuaries and wetlands are only 0·3% of available global surface water yet support 47–53% (> 15 000) of all extant fish species. Freshwater fishes are globally valuable yet threatened everywhere through overfishing, pollution, habitat loss, damming, alien invasive species and climate change. Hence, they are in dire need of effective and sustained conservation action, including through zoo and aquarium programmes in the wild and ex situ. To address these challenges, zoo and aquarium staff need to be familiar with the substantial issues, develop greater expertise, and become better integrated in wider regional and global initiatives in freshwater‐fish conservation and sustainability. Resolving diverse issues requires knowledge of the many different values in the conservation of freshwater fishes, including sustainable commercial fisheries and the aquarium trade. It is necessary to assess and mitigate threats to fish survival through research and monitoring. An improved conservation‐orientated science of threatened fish species is also needed in terms of taxonomy and biology. From this, the implementation and dissemination of appropriate conservation policies, strategies and legislation can be developed. All these factors enable direct practical action for fish conservation, in conjunction with improved zoo education, training and public communication. Finally, review and evaluation of the efficacy of various conservation actions must be carried out in order to plan future undertakings.

<b>Professor Gordon McGregor Reid</b>
Gordon has had a diverse international career involving biological research, conservation, animal welfare and environmental education. He has authored more than 200 scientific publications, and held senior positions in zoos, museums and universities. Gordon is Chair of the IUCN‐SSC/Wetlands International Freshwater Fish Specialist Group. With a worldwide membership, this works to conserve freshwater fishes and their habitats. He is a Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Liverpool; Scientific Research Associate, British Museum of Natural History; and Director Emeritus of Chester Zoo (The North of England Zoological Society). He was Director General of Chester Zoo, for more than 15 years, until his retirement in 2010. He was also a government‐appointed Zoo Inspector, and a President of the Linnean Society of London and of the WAZA. He was a founding Chair of the Amphibian Ark, a successful conservation partnership between WAZA, CBSG and IUCN‐SSC, and also helped establish the WAZA Climate Change Taskforce, jointly with IUCN‐CBSG. Gordon has received many honours including: CBSG's Ulysses S. Seal Medal for Innovation in Conservation; EAZA's Lifetime Achievement Award; WAZA's Heini Hediger Award. In 2013, he became an Honorary Freeman of Chester and Cheshire, and was also awarded the Zoological Society of London Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Zoo Community.</p>

<b>Professor Topiltzin Contreras MacBeath</b>
Topilitzin is a Professor at the Biological Research Center of the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos, central Mexico, where he is head of the Conservation Biology working group. His main research interests are related to freshwater ecosystems and endangered fish species conservation. He has described and published aspects of the biology, ecology and conservation of Mexican freshwater fishes. Since 1997, he has coordinated the Mesoamerican Network of Biotic Resources (REDMESO), which brings together 23 public universities in the Mesoamerican region. The network conducts research projects and develops technologies designed to support the sustainable management of ecosystems, having respect for cultural and biological diversity. He has served as an advisor to the Mexican Government in Sustainable Development issues. He is President of the Advisory Committee of the Natural Protected Area ‘
<i>Corredor Biológico Chichinautzin</i>
’ where he has been working for 20 years with other researchers, local authorities and stakeholders in designing and implementing strategies directed towards the sustainable management of the area. He is Chair of the IUCN‐SSC Freshwater Conservation Sub‐committee. Currently he is Minister for Sustainable Development of the Government of the State of Morelos in Mexico.</p>

<b>Dr Katalin CsatÁdi</b>
Katalin has been Programme Officer for the IUCN‐SSC/Wetlands International Freshwater Fish Specialist Group (FFSG) since the beginning of 2012. She is based at Chester Zoo (the North of England Zoological Society, which generously supports the running of the FFSG), and is responsible for internal and external communication, event organization and coordination of the Specialist Group. Katalin has MSc and PhD degrees in biology from the Eotvos Lorand University of Sciences, Budapest, Hungary, and before her current position was mainly working in the environmental‐charity sector of Hungary. While still at university she founded the Hungarian branch of the international Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) and was responsible for the executive management of the organization until late 2011. While with JGI she completed a 6 month fieldwork assignment in the Democratic Republic of Congo that has triggered her ongoing interest in community‐centred nature conservation.</p>

<abstract>Fresh waters in lakes, ponds, rivers, estuaries and wetlands are only 0·3% of available global surface water yet support 47–53% (> 15 000) of all extant fish species. Freshwater fishes are globally valuable yet threatened everywhere through overfishing, pollution, habitat loss, damming, alien invasive species and climate change. Hence, they are in dire need of effective and sustained conservation action, including through zoo and aquarium programmes in the wild and ex situ. To address these challenges, zoo and aquarium staff need to be familiar with the substantial issues, develop greater expertise, and become better integrated in wider regional and global initiatives in freshwater‐fish conservation and sustainability. Resolving diverse issues requires knowledge of the many different values in the conservation of freshwater fishes, including sustainable commercial fisheries and the aquarium trade. It is necessary to assess and mitigate threats to fish survival through research and monitoring. An improved conservation‐orientated science of threatened fish species is also needed in terms of taxonomy and biology.
