We show here that tomato (<italic>Lycopersicon esculentum</italic> Mill.) plants transgenic for a heterologous <italic>Clarkia breweri S</italic>-linalool synthase (<italic>LIS</italic>) gene, under the control of the tomato late-ripening-specific <italic>E8</italic> promoter, synthesize and accumulate <italic>S-</italic>linalool and 8-hydroxylinalool in ripening fruits. Apart from the difference in volatiles, no other phenotypic alterations were noted, including the levels of other terpenoids such as γ- and α-tocopherols, lycopene, β-carotene, and lutein. Our studies indicate that it is possible to enhance the levels of monoterpenes in ripening fruits by metabolic engineering.</p></div></front></TEI><pmc article-type="research-article"><pmc-comment>The publisher of this article does not allow downloading of the full text in XML form.</pmc-comment>
