Abstract

Intramyocellular lipid (IMCL) variations in older men are poorly explored. In young adults, IMCL can be influenced by both diet and exercise interventions; this flexibility is related to aerobic fitness. We evaluated in active older adults the influence of maximal aerobic capacity on short‐term diet and exercise‐induced variations in IMCL stores.

<head>Abstract</head>
Aims
<p>Intramyocellular lipid (
<hi rend="fc">IMCL</hi>
) variations in older men are poorly explored. In young adults,
<hi rend="fc">IMCL</hi>
can be influenced by both diet and exercise interventions; this flexibility is related to aerobic fitness. We evaluated in active older adults the influence of maximal aerobic capacity on short‐term diet and exercise‐induced variations in
<hi rend="fc">IMCL</hi>
stores.</p>
Methods
<p>Intramyocellular lipids were measured by
<hi rend="superscript">1</hi>
H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (
<hi rend="superscript">1</hi>
<hi rend="fc">H</hi>
<hi rend="fc">MRS</hi>
) after a 3‐day fat depletion‐replenishment diet (
<hi rend="fc">IMCL
<hi rend="subscript">FDR</hi>
</hi>
) and immediately after a 2‐h exercise at 50%
<hi rend="fc">VO</hi>
<hi rend="subscript">2</hi>
max (
<hi rend="fc">IMCL
<hi rend="subscript">FDR</hi>
</hi>
<hi rend="subscript">_</hi>
<hi rend="fc">
<hi rend="subscript">EX</hi>
</hi>
). To further explore diet influence, the protocol was repeated after a high‐fat diet (
<hi rend="fc">HF</hi>
), with both pre‐ and post‐exercise measurements (
<hi rend="fc">IMCL
<hi rend="subscript">HF</hi>
</hi>
and
<hi rend="fc">IMCL
<hi rend="subscript">HF</hi>
</hi>
<hi rend="subscript">_</hi>
<hi rend="fc">
<hi rend="subscript">EX</hi>

).</p>
Results
<p>In active older men (69.8 ± 5.2 years),
<hi rend="fc">IMCL
<hi rend="subscript">FDR</hi>
</hi>
was lowered by exercise (
<hi rend="fc">IMCL

<hi rend="fc">IMCL

<hi rend="italic">P</hi>

<hi rend="italic">P</hi>

<hi rend="italic">r</hi>
 = −0.72).
<hi rend="fc">IMCL

was linked with aerobic fitness (
<hi rend="italic">P</hi>

<hi rend="italic">r</hi>

<hi rend="fc">IMCL

was lower than
<hi rend="fc">IMCL
<hi rend="subscript">FDR</hi>

(
<hi rend="italic">P</hi>
 < 0.05), decreased after exercise (
<hi rend="italic">P</hi>
 < 0.05) and varied also as a function of initial store (
<hi rend="italic">P</hi>
 < 0.05,
<hi rend="italic">r</hi>
 = −0.89), but without link with aerobic fitness. Finally, diet‐induced
<hi rend="fc">IMCL</hi>
store variations were positively linked to aerobic fitness (
<hi rend="italic">P</hi>
 < 0.05,
<hi rend="italic">r</hi>
 = 0.89).</p>
Conclusion
<p>Variations of the
<hi rend="fc">IMCL</hi>
stores in physically active older adults appear related to aerobic fitness, with similarly fast adaptation to short‐term interventions combining diet and exercise as young active adults.</p>
