<AbstractText>This article synthesizes three independent studies on children and youth, including orphans, conducted in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi. The Zimbabwe study focuses on the impact of HIV/AIDS on children living in a commercial farm worker community; the Zambia study examines the psychological and physical needs of families living with HIV/AIDS with an emphasis on the needs of children; and the Malawi study focuses on AIDS knowledge and its impact on adolescents, with implications for interventions. Together, the studies provide valuable insights into the impact of the AIDS epidemic on children and youth. The Zambia study utilized a children's behavioral questionnaire to elicit information on children's behavior from adults; the Malawi study used a combination of a survey questionnaire and personal observation of 229 students between the ages of 12 and 20 years; and the Zimbabwe study used a qualitative operational and participatory method. Overall, the studies found a similar impact of AIDS on children from impoverished backgrounds indicating that poverty intensifies the impacts and further predisposes children to the risk of infection. These three studies, through findings from diverse methodologies, endorses the central importance of engaging young people actively and effectively in the response to the epidemic and highlights the urgency of taking seriously young people's immediate and long term needs to help them be active participants in shaping their future.</AbstractText>
