Abstract

Examples have been selected from several nations to identify the conditions associated with the application of potentially successful innovative strategies based on new techniques and services in the field of transport-related telematics. Their effectiveness has been evaluated with regard to sustainable developments in transport, and their potential for success has been judged by reference to Germany's existing framework. The countries under review show notable differences in regard to their legal, institutional and organizational background. Some have adopted strict regulations backed up by law; others apply rules and regulations in a less binding manner. Especially US and Japanese government agencies have, since the midnineties, become extensively involved with innovative strategies in the field of transport policies.
