Abstract

Metadata is data about data: data that describes attributes of a resource, characterizes its relationships, supports its discovery and effective use, and exist for the most part in an electronic environment. Parallel and independant metadata schemes have developed as comunities responsible for creating or providing access to networked electronic resources developed their own methods for organizing the resources. The author reviews a variety of metadata schemes used in the library and information science communities, and examines their background, development, and implementation. Some of the schemes were developed within a specific subcommunity or domain, for example, IAFA Templates, MARC, Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) Headers, Encoded Archival Description (EAD), Computer Interchange of Museum Information (CIMI), Government Information Locator Service (GILS), and Content Standards for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM). The content and syntax of each metadata type varies depending on the specialized needs of its users.
