The aim of this randomized placebo‐controlled clinical trial was to evaluate the effects of Lactobacillus reuteri‐containing probiotic lozenges as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP).

All patients received one‐stage full‐mouth disinfection and randomly assigned over a test (SRP + probiotic, n = 15) or control (SRP + placebo, n = 15) group. All patients received one‐stage full‐mouth disinfection and randomly assigned over a test (<fc>SRP</fc> + probiotic, <i>n</i> = 15) or control (<fc>SRP</fc> + placebo, <i>n</i> = 15) group. The lozenges were used two times a day for 12 weeks.</p></section><section xml:id="jcpe12155-sec-0003"><title type="main">Results</title><p>At week 12, all clinical parameters were significantly reduced in both groups, while there was significantly more pocket depth reduction (<i>p</i> < 0.05) and attachment gain (<i>p</i> < 0.05) in moderate and deep pockets; more <i>Porphyromonas gingivalis</i> reduction was observed in the <fc>SRP</fc> + probiotic group.</p></section><section xml:id="jcpe12155-sec-0004"><title type="main">Conclusions</title><p>The results indicate that oral administration of <i>L. reuteri</i> lozenges could be a useful adjunct to <fc>SRP</fc> in chronic periodontitis.</p></section></abstract><abstract type="short" xml:id="jcpe12155-abs-0002"><p>View the pubcast on this paper at <url href="http://www.scivee.tv/journalnode/61090">http://www.scivee.tv/journalnode/61090</url></p></abstract></abstractGroup></contentMeta><noteGroup xml:id="jcpe12155-ntgp-0001"><note xml:id="jcpe12155-note-0100">These authors contributed equally to the study.</note><note numbered="no" xml:id="jcpe12155-note-0001"><p><b>Conflict of interest and source of funding statement</b></p><p>The authors declare that they do not have a conflict of interest.
