Abstract

Several typical embankment problems are analyzed using the proposed procedure for determining the cap-plasticity-model parameters and the general-purpose finite element program in this paper. Several important practical features of embankment design are described and illustrated with numerical examples. These include undrained condition, embankment widening and raising, multiple-layer foundation soils, and measures for improving embankment stability. Emphasis of the analyses was placed on the engineering interpretation of the finite element results, including evaluation of the effects of construction processes, characteristics of deformation, and evaluation of stability and performance of embankment with some measures for improving stability. It is concluded that the drainage of foundation soil can improve the stability of the embankment fill, construction of berms can effectively improve embankment stability, and geotextile will develop considerable resistance in the occurrence of large deformation.
