Abstract

Incidental versus intentional memorization of visually coded and haptically coded location (Eperimenr 1), haptically coded texture (Experiment 2A), and visually coded color (Experiment 2B) were studied in children aged 7 and 9 years. The objective was to determine wherther the same mode of processing (automatic vs attentional) is at work in vision and in haptics. In addition to age effects, the results showed that (1) location was well memorized incidentally in both modalities suggestin g automaticity; 2) haptic texture was recalled only under intentional learning instructions, suggesting effortful processing, while (visual) color was well memorized under both incidental and intentional learnin g conditions. The comparison between the visual and haptic modes of object property processing is discussed in relation to Hasher and Zacks' (1979) definition of automaticity and to Klatzky and Lederman's studies of haptic exploratory procedures (1987; Klatzky, Lederman, & Reed, 1989)
