Abstract
This paper presents some considerations on the motivation for the development and use of tactile sensing in robotics. Some examples of tactile sensor technology and application are discussed, with the aim of giving the reader a feeling of what has been achieved, and some hints are given on the research directions to pursue in order to obtain useful results in this field.
