Abstract

N-[5-(hydroxylaminocarbonyl)pentyl]phenanthridium chloride 1 has been shown to induce cleavage of ColE1 DNA in the presence of transition (ferrous, ferric and vanadyl) or lanthanide(III) (lutetium, thulium and europium) metal ions. The addition of free radical scavengers inhibits the former reaction, but does not the latter case.
