Abstract
Liquid-liquid extraction of neodymium, terbium and thulium by di (2-ethyl hexyl) phosphoric acid (HDEHP) in the presence of 2-ethyl-2-hydroxy butyric acid has been studied. The nature of the complexed species was probed by a study of the effect of nitric acid in the aqueous phase on distribution ratios (D) of the metal ions and has been explained with the aid of the equilibria involved in the system. The role of complexing agents on the mechanism of extraction and the separability of lanthanides has been assessed
