Abstract

Copyright (c) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. The photon avalanche, which is a general bifurcation phenomenon, is described using the Landau theory and we find an analytical expression of the critical slowing at threshold. As soon as the Gaussian intensity profile of the input beam is taken into account, the rate equation model reproduces quantitatively experimental results.
