Abstract

This paper reports on an ultrasound study of rare earth Er-Tm single crystals as a function of temperature (4.2-300 K) and applied magnetic field (0-4 T). Two different compositions of the hexagonal close packed crystals were studied, containing 91.6% and 93.3% atomic weight of Er. The elastic constants, C11, C33, C44 and C66 were measured as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field. At zero applied magnetic field, anomalies were observed at 18, 24, 38, 47 and 55 K in addition to the anomaly at the Neel temperature TN, 82 K. The magnetic phase transition temperatures and structures of these alloys have been previously studied at zero field using neutron diffraction. The present results provide the first information on the behavior of the magnetic phase boundaries in an applied magnetic field. Softening of the material was observed when a magnetic field was applied along both the c (hexagonal) axis and the a crystallographic axis (in the basal plane). © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
