Abstract
Rare earth ions enter the lattice readily and only one defect site for Er3+ is observed compared to the many different sites that can be accommodated in other crystals. Effective energy transfer occurs between the Er3+ and Tm3+ ions and the low phonon frequencies improve the optical transition quantum efficiency
