Abstract
The polarized absorption spectra of Tm3+ ions in LiNbO3 and LiNbO3(MgO) crystals, at 20 K, are presented. The Stark levels of the different multiplets up to 28 000 cm-1 are identified. The result are consistent with C3 symmetry for the rare-earth ions and a singlet (A) character for the lower Stark level of the ground state. Several transitions show additional structure, which indicates multi-site occupancy for the Tm3+ ions
