Abstract

Crystals of CsMgCl3 doped with Tm3+ exhibit a strikingly strong up-conversion luminescence when the 1G4(D) state is pumped under pulser excitation at 465 nm. The most intense up-conversion emissions, which appear in the near-UV, originate from the 1I6(F) state at 34100 cm-1. Weaker features from the 1D2(E) state at 27700 cm-1 are also observed. At 11 K the 1I6(F) and 1D2(E) emissions exhibit the rise and fall kinetics consistent with cross-relaxation from photoexcited pairs
