Abstract

Copyright (c) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved. The isothermal section at 800°C of the Tm-Fe-Si ternary phase diagram was investigated using X-ray diffractometry, metallographic analysis and EDX-microanalysis. We found eleven binary and at least nine ternary phases. For two ternary phases reported as Tm2Fe4Si9 with Y2Fe4Si9-type structure [1] and Tm3Fe2Si7 with Ho3Co2Si7-type structure [1] the composition could not be confirmed, but was found as Tm9±1Fe26±1Si65±3 and Tm21±1Fe18.5±1Si60.5±1. New ternary phases were found at compositions Tm30±1Fe12.8±1Si57.2±1, which could be indexed orthorhombic, Tm30±2Fe5±1Si65±3, Tm37±1Fe25±1Si38±1 and Tm40±1Fe19±1Si41±1. Two binary and four ternary phases are in equilibrium with the re-entrant superconducting compound Tm2Fe3Si5, which are FeSi, TmSi, TmFe2Si2, Tm21±1Fe18.5±1Si60.5±1, Tm9±1Fe26±1Si65±1 and Tm30±1Fe12.8±1Si57.2±1. The width of the homogeneity range of the Tm2Fe3Si5 phase was determined to 1.6±0.4 at.% at constant Tm concentration and to 0.5±0.15 at.% at constant Fe/Si-ratio.
