Abstract
Abstract: The pharmacology and toxicology of terbium, thulium, and ytterbium chlorides have been investigated. Both acute intraperitoneal and oral toxicity of the three chemicals was of the delayed type. The symptoms of such toxicity have been described and were identical for all three chemicals. The chronic oral ingestion of these materials by rats at three dosage levels revealed that ytterbium did not affect the growth rate, whereas both terbium and thulium at the 0.1 and 1.0% levels suppressed growth of both sexes during the 12-week period. However, the hemograms of the animals were not affected. Perinuclear vacuolization in the liver was the only histopathologic change found in all the tissues examined, and it appeared to be sex linked. The pharmacologic responses to all three compounds were mainly depressant on all systems studied, and death was associated with cardiovascular collapse coupled with respiratory paralysis. The greatest damage observed was on abraded skin, where ulcerations occurred that required 45 days for healing. Terbium was very irritating also to intact skin but did not produce scarring. This chemical produced transient damage to the cornea, and all three chemicals caused cojunctival ulcerations requiring 18 days for healing. The toxicologic effects of terbium, thulium, and ytterbium were compared with the effects of other rare elements.
