Abstract

Abstract: The absorption spectrum of Pr3+ ion in diluted, hydrated chloride crystals in the visible region was observed at 77°K and 4.2°K with polarized light and high dispersion. An analysis has been made and crystal quantum numbers assigned to many of the stark levels of 3H4,3P0,1,2, 1I6 and 1D2 states. A comparison is made with the corresponding levels in the anhydrous salts and with the free ion levels. Shielding of the rare earth ion from the surrounding ligands by the water molecules is pointed out.
