Abstract
For ions traversing a target, a simple approach is proposed, in which the dependence of energy straggling on stopping power is considered as a first order correction. A formula is deduced which applies for targets in which the variation of energy loss with energy can be approximated by a linear function. It is shown for two typical cases that the relative variation of energy loss with energy has to be taken into account. For large energy losses in thick targets, we show that the corrected data are comparable to those measured with thin targets, it is indicated that the correction can no longer be considered as negligible at low energies.
